I had gone for a summer vacation along with my family to Shiroda in Konkan region of Maharashtra. On day one, after having delicious lunch made by my mother-in-law, I was sitting in the backyard of my in-laws’ house. I was just about to sleep and suddenly I heard a repetitive ‘tuck-tuck-tuck’ sound coming from near by trees. It sounded like somebody was hitting the wooden plate or tree trunk. As the sound was interesting, I was eager to find where it was coming from.
I grabbed my camera and went into the midst of the trees to find out the tuck-tuck sound. A quick hopping movement of a bird catched my attention. It was a Woodpecker somewhere of a length of 25-30 cms. This was my second closest encounter with Woodpecker and I wanted some good photos to be clicked.
It was interesting to observe the upward movement of the Woodpecker. The Woodpecker was hitting the trunk 3-4 times and moving up on the tree. This bird looks beautiful with a combination of golden, white and black colors. And top of it the spiked hat with red color makes it look more attractive. I managed to click 5-6 good pics and I searched the internet to know the exact name of this Woodpecker.
I found this Woodpecker is known as the black-rumped flameback (Dinopium benghalense). It is also known as the lesser golden-backed woodpecker or lesser goldenback which is found across the Indian subcontinent [1].
Here are some interesting pics captured by me.

The bird has beautiful colours! I remember seeing woodpeckers while growing up in Delhi, but haven’t seen one in a long time now …

What a coincidence, Sachin. I also captured BF woodpecker in a similar situation 3 years ago. I wrote a post too. Will provide you a link to the same.
