Ganpatipule is a small town located on western coast in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, India. This town is famous for temple of Lord Ganesh which is also known as Ganpatipule temple situated on the beautiful Ganpatipule beach. Ganpatipule derived its name from “Ganapati” or the Lord of “Ganas” (army) and ‘Pule’ which means sand dune. Here is a quick snapshot of places visited during my visit to Ganpatipule twice along with my family few years back. <\/p>\n

Ganpatipule Temple<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Ganpatipule temple is most visited temple by devotees after the eight known Ganesh temples of Maharashtra, also known as Ashtavinayak temples. This temple is situated on the Ganpatipule beach just at base of the hill. The idol of Lord Ganesh is facing the west side. Such idols are known as Paschim Dwardevata. According to history of this temple, the temple is 500 years old and a Svayambhu one (self originated). It is said that the original temple was initially built by Bal Bhatji Bhide. Over the years, the temple was rebuilt by Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and later on the beautification was done by Peshwas including Nanasaheb, Ramabai and Madhavrao Peshwa. <\/p>\n

The present temple was built between year 1998 and 2003, using a special type of stone known as Agra-red stone. The temple represents the old form of
\ntemple architecture built by stones and carvings on it. The red stone colour, carvings on walls & pillar and the white dome, makes the temple attractive. <\/p>\n

Ganpatipule Beach<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Ganpatipule beach is spread across 3 kms stretch with large number of coconut trees. It is known as one of the best beaches in Konkan region. The beach is clean and beautiful. It attracts most of the tourists during summer and winter season. There are various water sports facilities on the beach. You will also find food stall with local snacks such vada-pav and bhajji (Onion & Potatoes pakodas) apart from regular sevpuri-panipuri and ice-candy stalls. If you plan a stay at Ganpatipule, make sure go for an early morning beach walk. Enjoy the cool breeze, mild waves, clean water and soft sand during your walk.<\/p>\n

Karhateshwar temple<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Karhateshwar temple is situated in the Nandivade village which is an approximately 23 kms from Ganpatipule. The hindu God, lord Shiva is worshipped in this temple. Inside the temple, the Shiv lingam is place in the centre and there are small metal made replicas of snakes placed in one corner. The temple is built using wood and has a typical old look similar to other temples found in the Konkan region. Outside the temple, you will see a Gaumukh (mouth of the cow) with continuous fresh water flow. The surrounding area is green, peaceful and close to sea. It is a must visit place if you are in Ganpatipule.<\/p>\n

Ratnagiri Aquarium<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Ratnagiri Aquarium is close to Ganpatipule. It’s a small setup of fish tanks with some rare and beautiful marine species like Seahorse, Starfish, Tiger fish, Snake fish, Sea turtles, Lobsters and many other species. There are also various display boards on marine life. If your kids are along with you, they will definitely enjoy this aquarium. So, don’t forget to visit this place too.<\/p>\n

Abhishek Beach Resort & Spa <\/strong><\/p>\n

During our first trip, we stayed at a local homestay type small room. Our second trip was a better planned one. We managed to get a room at Abhishek Beach Resort. It is one of the best known resort in Ganpatipule, spread across 8 acres land providing accommodation in Rooms, Suites and Villas. We were lucky to get a room which was beach facing with a big balcony. It was nice to view and capture beautiful sunset from the balcony. The ambience in the resort was good. The quality of food and service provided by the resort was excellent. It seems that a new ‘Spa’ has been introduced and the resort is renamed as ‘Abhishek Beach Resort & Spa’. Our experience during both the trips was memorable. Once you visit Ganpatipule, you will feel like coming back every year. The divine atmosphere in the temple, pristine beaches, taste of konkani food and helpful people will remind you of Konkan region of Maharashtra. So, if you are planning your trip in Konkan, make sure the above places are in your trip list.<\/p>\n

How to reach:<\/strong><\/p>\n

By Road<\/strong> – The Ganpatipule is around 32 km distance from Nevali village which is on Mumbai-Goa highway (NH-17). Ganapatipule is also connected with other cities by state transport buses. Buses are available from major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Sangli, Kolhapur and Solapur to Ratnagiri.<\/p>\n

By Rail <\/strong>– The nearest railway is Ratnagiri and Bhoke. All passenger train and express trains stops at Ratnagiri as it one of the main station on the
\nKonkan railway route. Bhoke is a small village and only passenger trains will stop there.<\/p>\n

By Air<\/strong> – Kolhapur airport is the closest to Ratnagiri.<\/p>\n

Other places to visit<\/strong> – Jaigad Fort, Jaigad Lighthouse, Velneshwar, Malgund, Hedvi, Gaywade Beach, Prachin Konkan, Karneshwar, Marleshwar<\/p>\n
