The Shiroda market is located at entrance of the Shiroda village. This small and beautiful village is a part of Vengurla taluka in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. Local vegetables and varieties of fish are available during morning hours in this market. However, the big market opens up on Sunday when people from near by villages come for weekly shopping. You get to see lot of vegetables, fruits, spices, fresh/dry fish, earthen pots, clothes and lots of mangoes, jackfruits, kokums during summer season. People come here specially to buy local pulses such as Fajav, Kulith, Kadve Vals and Ukde Tandul (Brown rice), Lal Pohe (Red flattened rice) too.
Most of the stuff you get here is at reasonable rates. I have observed people don’t generally bargain in this market. As most of vegetables, fruits, pulses are locally produced and farmers directly sell in the market with some nominal margin which seems to be a sufficient daily profit for them. The farmers try to sell whatever they could before the market closes. During summer season, it’s a tough time for sellers in the market to be under scorching heat for 4-5 hours. At end of the market closure you get to see some happy faces of sellers if their all goods are sold. It’s a different experience to be in this crowded market and interact with the locals.
I visit Shiroda every year along with my family. This year, I decided to take a photowalk in the market and capture some photos using my mobile camera. Here are some quick pics of the Shiroda market.
