Plum and Grey Headed Parakeets

Top post on IndiBlogger, the biggest community of Indian Bloggers

The Plum and Grey headed parakeets belongs to a parrot family known as Psittacidae [1]. This species are normally found across the Indian Subcontinent and South-East Asia. They are generally found in flocks. Their swift movements with twists and turns are treat to watch.

While in group, they are found in pairs. Males have plum colour head with thin black colour ring around the neck and females have grey colour head. Rest of the body is light green with wings covered by slight dark green colour. Both have a light orange beak which looks attractive.

According to Wikipedia, this species are known to be social and noisy with range of raucous calls [1]. They mainly feed on grains, fruits and sometimes petals of flowers. During early morning hours, they are found in farms or on huge trees. Sometimes on trees, they are difficult to locate due to their green colour.

This species of parrot looks beautiful. Last month, I was lucky to capture them during my Konkan trip. I found a flock of parakeets swiftly landing on a huge tree. As soon as I started zooming to capture them, I found that these are not normal green parakeets. They are different with plum and grey heads and light orange beak.

It was nice to locate and capture them. Here are some beautiful photos captured by me.
